I’m so excited to start my “Warrior Wednesday” series featuring incredible, empowering people I’ve met along life’s journey! These individuals inspire me to continue to go after my dreams and help others. I hope they touch your hearts as much as they’ve touched mine!
Today’s post comes from the state of Wisconsin…
Meet Emma. I first met her while I was working for The Color Run in 2013. We connected through email and text message, showing support for each other through our organizations. Little did I know the impact this girl would have on my life! At the age of 16, this girl changed my outlook forever. She has one of the most genuine, kind hearts I’ve ever known. Here is her story:
“On January 17, 2012 my world forever changed. As a sophomore in high school I was looking forward to getting my drivers license, picking out my homecoming dress, and planning ahead on where I wanted to go to college. However, this all changed in an instant when I was diagnosed with Leukemia. I went from being a full-time student to a cancer patient in a matter of a day. I spent the next 10 months undergoing some of the harshest chemotherapies given to children, not to mention the surgeries, spinal taps, bone marrow biopsies, PICC line placements, and echocardiograms that were part of my protocol.
On December 28, 2012 I had finally finished my intense phase of treatment and entered my maintenance phase or the ‘easier’ part of treatment. I was going in only once a month for chemo rather than weekly, and was started to feel more like myself. My hair was growing back, my energy levels were up, and I was finally able to return back to school. It was then that I realized, as crazy as it sounds, that cancer had given me many blessings.
I was inspired to start a foundation called Emma Rose- A Patient Helping Patients, which collects and donates comfort packages to kids fighting cancer at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. I bring about 60 gifts each month to these kiddos! It makes my heart so full to see these young kids smile when they receive a gift, even though I know they may have had a tough day.
My diagnosis also inspired my future career goals. Before January 2012, I never would have imagined myself as a nurse. I actually fainted when my sister got her ears pierced! 🙂 Now, I can’t picture myself as anything else. I am currently a sophomore in the nursing program and couldn’t be more excited for where my future is taking me!”
This girl is truly one-of-a-kind! I’m so blessed to know her. If you haven’t already, like her FB page here Emma Rose- A Patient Helping Patients ! When I’m bummed out or discouraged, I often go to this page for a lift. Her patient stories are so beautiful and I’m grateful that people like Emma are in this world!
If you are interested in donating, Emma collects fuzzy socks, chapsticks, mini hand sanitizers, small activity books, colored pencils and gift cards (any donation, any amount). You can mail any donations to Emma Rose PO Box 485 Thiensville, WI 53092. All donations will go directly towards the kids at CHW.
This quote perfectly sums up my girl Emma…
Spread love wherever you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.
Happy Warrior Wednesday! Who is your warrior? XOXO,
